3 Days in Favignana Island, Sicily | Overview

Levanzo and Favignana are less than half an hour by hydrofoil from Trapani, which makes them the easiest islands to visit in Sicily. Favignana is the largest of the three Egadi islands and its serrated coastline shelters incredible coves such as Cala Rossa and Cala Azzurra. The island is also famous for its tuna, and you’ll find plenty of wonderful restaurants to give it a taste—I’ve recommended a few of my favorite just below!

Although Favignana can be visited on a day trip from Trapani, Jake and I decided to stay three full days on the island and enjoyed having this time to get fully immersed in the slow and relaxed way of life.

3 Days in Favignana Island, Sicily | How to Get to Favignana

There are two ferry companies making the crossing between Trapani and Favignana: Liberty and Siremar. Liberty takes about 30 minutes and has regular daily departures. Find full and current timetables here directly on the Liberty Lines website.

Cost | a return journey costs about 30€ per person.

3 Days in Favignana Island, Sicily | Getting Around

From coast to coast the island is only 10 kilometers long so unless you have a family in tow, renting a car isn’t really necessary. The two best options to explore the islands are either by bike or by scooter and you can rent either of these options directly at the port when you arrive.

Cost | the costs vary slightly depending on the rental company, but you’ll pay about 25€ per day for a scooter, and 10€ per day for a bike.

3 Days in Favignana Island, Sicily | Points of Interest

Favignana is home to many beaches, coves, and other swimming spots and there are a few special spots you shouldn’t miss out on!

Cala Rossa

This large cove is equally popular as it is jaw-dropping! Sheltered by towering cliffs on either side, the water remains calm and inviting year-round and Cala Rossa is the perfect spot to visit on windy days in Favignana.

The cove gets popular in the summer months, and I advise you get here early if you want to get a prized spot on one of the few smooth rocks lining the water. Another important note is regarding bringing water shoes or jellies as Cala Rossa isn’t much of a sand beach, but rather a collection of very sharp rocks which you’ll have to scale across to access the water—but don’t let that scare you, the swim is absolutely worth the trouble!

If you’re an adventurous traveler, I also suggest you keep walking past the cove and towards the point to the right-hand side. There you’ll be able to explore the incredible mazes and caves created by the tufa quarries—a special type of stone extracted on the island. Almost feels like exploring ancient middle eastern pyramids or temples.

Note | If you’re planning on spending the day here, I’d recommend bringing some food with you as there is not much in terms of restaurants in that area.

Bue Marino

Named after the monk seals that used to call this place home, Bue Marino is an impressive playground of smooth rocks and man-made quarry vestiges. Quintessentially Sicilian, this small bathing spot is perfect to spend the late morning or early afternoon and snap of couple photos of the impressive caves looming just behind.

Here there is a small food truck selling tuna sandwiches and a lemon car offering up frozen granitas. You’ll recognize it when you see it!

Note | Be mindful of the wind conditions! One day Bue Marino can look like a pool, others it’s a stormy mess and the riptides of the canal can become quite dangerous.

Sailing Tour and Cala Azzurra

Favignana is the perfect place to indulge in all sea-related activities, including sailing and as sun and water lovers, Jake and I couldn’t resist booking a sailing experience to discover the island from the sea. There’s something so enchanting about discovering a coast from the ocean.

Needless to say, it is a costly activity, but it was by far one of our favorite experiences of the entire trip. We were shooting a video at the time and therefore had the budget to privatize the experience.

Cost | We paid 500€ for a full day of sailing including lunch, a pick up in Favignana, and drop off in Trapani. That being said, there are plenty of group tours that are far more affordable and were we traveling for leisure, we would have booked one of these. Here you can check out a few options.

3 Days in Favignana Island, Sicily | Where to Eat in Favignana

To me Sicily is as much about food ad it is about beach-going and exploration so I really couldn’t write a guide without mentioning at least a few of my favorite restaurants.

Tuna Fish City

The ultimate lunch spot for construction workers, fishermen, and tourists alike! Doesn’t look like much on the outside yet serves the best fresh tuna sandwich I’ve ever tasted. An absolute must-visit for a quick lunch break before you hit up the beach again.

Cost | Budget-friendly

Ristorante A’Cialoma

If you’re looking for a taste of authentic, local flavors, here’s my recommendation! The owner is lovely and does not speak a word of English which makes the experience all the more charming. This place will dazzle you with simple ingredients and homemade cuisine.

Cost | Lower mid-range

Osteria Del Sotto Sale

My favorite restaurant on the island! It’s slightly pricier than the other restaurants located on the same street, but the food is simply delicious and it is well worth the extra few dollars.

If you’ve been craving a fresh salad as I had been, Osteria Del Sotto Sale will be your savior. This restaurant also offers plenty of good vegetarian and vegan options, which by the way, can be challenging to find at times.

Pizza Pazza

You’re looking for an affordable and delicious take-out pizza? Pizza Pizza is the ultimate local spot and a literal hole in the wall. The pizzas are as delicious as they are cheap and the menu offers a myriad of varied options.

Cost | Budget-friendly

Diamora Cala del Pozzo

This restaurant is the most expensive on the list and is located on the other side of the island. Set in a serene atmosphere, this restaurant-hotel is the definition of quiet chic: think linen, raw stones, and muted earthy tones. If you’re thinking of taking your love on a cozy date, this might just be the place for you. Call in advance to ask for the menu, it’s fixed but varies every night.

I wouldn’t want to recommend you places I haven’t personally stayed out just for the sake of adding more words to this blog post, so I’ve only listed two options here. They both were wonderful in different regards and will depend most likely on your budget and desires for this Favignana journey.

The Fancy Option | Diamora Cala del Pozzo

This is the hotel attached to the restaurant I have mentioned above. Beautifully set amongst the Sicilian countryside and with a serene ocean backdrop, Diamora Cala del Pozzo has to be one of the most gorgeous places I have ever stayed at.

Every detail is consciously and sustainably thought out here. From their hand-made organic soaps to the fresh and extra local ingredients they source for their breakfasts, I mean, they even make their own almond milk! It’s honestly a version of paradise and hopefully, the pictures speak for themselves.

The Budget Option | Cave Garden Rooms

The owner Armando loves his job and it shows in the attention and detail he pays each of his guests! His wife, Cristina, makes amazing cakes every morning for breakfast, and the space is very well thought out. The hotel is close enough to the center to be convenient by bike or scooter, yet removed enough to be quiet.

I absolutely recommend this stay for people searching for something nice and quiet, yet affordable!
